Are Slope Rangefinders Legal in Golf?

Are Slope Rangefinders Legal in Golf?

Are Slope Rangefinders Legal in Golf?

Yes and no. Helpful answer, cheers golf rules.

A golf rangefinder with slope is legal to own and use, but slope-adjusted distances are not allowed during competition rounds where the Rules of Golf apply.

For casual rounds, practice, social golf, ambrose days, and general weekend hacking with the lads? Slope mode is sweet as, unless the event rules say otherwise.

For serious competition? Turn slope off and use straight-line distance only.

What does slope do on a golf rangefinder?

Slope mode adjusts the distance based on elevation.

So instead of only telling you the flag is 145 metres away, it might tell you the shot actually “plays like” 155 metres because it’s uphill.

Or it might play shorter downhill.

That’s handy because golf courses are rarely flat. Unless you’re playing on something designed by a roadworks crew.

Is slope allowed in tournament golf?

No. Slope-adjusted distance is not allowed in tournament play.

The R&A says distance-measuring devices can be used for distance or direction, but the equipment must not measure elevation changes or interpret distance information, such as providing club selection or a recommended line of play.

That means you can use a rangefinder for basic distance, but not for slope-adjusted playing distance during competition.

Can I use a rangefinder that has slope?

Yes, as long as the slope function is turned off during competition.

This is the key bit people get wrong. A rangefinder having slope mode is not the issue. Using slope mode during a competition round is the problem.

Some competitions may also choose to ban distance-measuring devices completely by Local Rule, so always check the event rules before you tee off. The R&A notes that a committee can adopt a Local Rule prohibiting distance-measuring devices.

When can I use slope mode?

Slope mode is great for:

  • Practice rounds
  • Casual weekend golf
  • Social rounds
  • Learning club distances
  • Courses with big elevation changes
  • Figuring out how uphill and downhill shots actually play

It’s especially useful if you’re trying to stop guessing and start making better club choices.

When should I turn slope off?

Turn slope off for:

  • Club competitions
  • Stroke play events
  • Match play events
  • Official handicap rounds where competition rules apply
  • Any event where the committee says distance-measuring devices must be distance-only

Basically, when the card actually matters, don’t be that guy.

What about the ParShark Pin Seeker?

The ParShark Pin Seeker Golf Laser Range Finder gives you fast laser distances, flag lock, a handy side display, 7x magnification, 600 m range, USB charging, and slope-adjusted distances when you want them.

For casual rounds and practice, slope mode helps you understand the real playing distance. For competition, turn slope off and use the straight-line distance.
